What is Women’s Health?

What are women’s health physical therapy & wellness services? Pelvic Health Physical Therapists are a specially trained part of the women’s healthcare team who diagnose and treat abdominopelvic and women’s health specific neuromusculoskeletal impairments such as:

  • Pregnancy related pain and discomfort
  • Recovery from c-section, abdominal separation, or diastases rectus abdominis
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction such as
    1. Incontinence or leakage of urine, feces, or gas
    2. Symptoms of prolapse
    3. Pelvic pain
    4. Pain with intercourse
    5. Muscles and structures that surround your pelvis

Did you know your back pain and urinary leakage could be related? Did you know your hip pain and pelvic pain could be coming from the same place? Did you know changing the way you lift, breath or move could change all of the above symptoms? I will assess you “nipples to knees” to address how your body works together to relieve pain and dysfunction – the goal is to educate you to be empowered to take care of yourself.

**It is important to note that Telehealth laws in the US dictate that a physical therapist cannot evaluate and treat injuries if they are not licensed in the state the client resides in. As such, telehealth consultation is technically, and legally, considered a “wellness” or “patient education” visit- which IS within the legal scope of physiotherapists across state and country lines. Please contact us if you are unsure if you qualify for telehealth sessions.**

Advocacy
My goal is to improve your health and function, I strive to get you the best care possible. If this isn’t possible within this format I will help you find the type of provider or someone similar close to you. The only difference between a traditional, in person, pelvic health appointment is the absence of an internal or vaginal pelvic floor muscles assessment. In a previous life, in a previous clinic, I performed these assessments and they have GREAT value. My job now as a telehealth women’s health PT is to discern if I can help you without an internal manual assessment – for many individuals and complaints, I can. However, my goal is to help you get the best treatment possible; if I determine you would be better suited with an in person assessment, I will assist you in finding a practitioner in your area. – Dr. Laurel Proulx
